Our most recent of four projects for UNICEF Innocenti was for the Behavioral Insights Research and Design (BIRD) Lab, which is part of UNICEF’s centre for research on children. The BIRD Lab is a hub for researchers to explore uses of behavioural science for addressing pressing children’s issues around the world. The Lab requested a variety of multimedia to promote their work on social and behavioural change communication (SBCC).

Our objective was to design a dynamic platform that effectively communicates their research and demonstrates its real-world impact on children’s well-being across multiple regions. This included developing a custom microsite, brochure, and animation to engage a global audience.

Our microsite acts as a comprehensive informational platform with features such as an interactive map and three detailed case studies to enhance understanding and offer insights into BIRD Lab’s work in the area of SBCC. It provides background context, scenarios involving behavioural biases, barriers, as well as behavioural science solutions detailing the approach used by UNICEF's BIRD Lab to augment child-centric research and achieve tangible program outcomes in multiple regions and countries. Through interactive visuals and diagrams, and real-world applications, we allow users to grasp these complex concepts more easily.

To enhance user understanding, we incorporated interactive visuals such as clickable diagrams and methodology visualizations that guide users through the Lab’s work. These features, combined with the character-based learning activity, provide an engaging, hands-on way to explore behavioral science concepts.

Accessibility was a key priority, with features like high-contrast modes, text resizing, and screen reader compatibility to ensure usability for individuals with varying abilities. The intuitive layout and responsive design ensured that users, regardless of their needs or device, could easily navigate and engage with the content.

The microsite’s design successfully aligns with the BIRD Lab’s mission to make behavioural science both engaging and impactful. With color-coded sections, interactive content, and a clear visual identity, the site guides users through the research in an intuitive way. The bright, professional design reflects the Lab’s brand and highlights its commitment to accessibility, clarity, and trustworthiness. By combining educational content with interactive elements, the microsite fosters a deeper connection with users, ensuring the Lab’s pioneering research resonates globally and drives real-world change for children.
