Writer / Researcher

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a detail-oriented, creative, and proactive Writer/Researcher to support our business development efforts while also contributing to one of our core departments: Research, Marketing & Impact; Media & Design; or Digital Learning & Products. This role reports jointly to the HR & Procurement Manager and, depending on your skills and interests, to a Lead within your chosen department. Your work will be diverse and fast-paced, encompassing both technical and creative research and writing in collaboration with multiple team members. You’ll contribute to the company’s strategic business development needs by developing compelling project proposals while also supporting departmental initiatives through research, content development, and storytelling.

Professional Development Bootcamp

At Sandbox, we believe in growing talent from within. As part of this role, you will participate in a bootcamp with our business development team, contributing to proposal development work, where you’ll gain a deep understanding of our projects, storytelling approach, and client landscape. This experience will provide you with a strong foundation to step into research and writing for client projects in other departments.

Proposal & Business Development Writing

  • Conduct market research to identify relevant project opportunities for Sandbox to bid on.
  • Develop and write compelling proposals and funding applications for a wide range of potential projects.
  • Conduct targeted research to inform proposal strategy, ensuring alignment with client needs and funding requirements.
  • Organize and structure content for proposals, ensuring adherence to RFP requirements, clarity, coherence, and technical accuracy.
  • Ensure all written materials meet formal submission guidelines, communicate complex ideas effectively, and use Sandbox’s brand voice.

After developing a strong foundation in proposal and business development work, you will begin contributing to one of the following departments. Your time will be balanced between proposal and business development and departmental projects, with the specific focus shifting based on priorities and incoming work.

Other departmental work may include:

Research, Marketing & Impact

  • Conduct market and audience research to inform project strategy, shape impactful narratives, and guide client decision-making.
  • Contribute to research design, data collection and analysis through interviews, focus groups and surveys, findings development, report writing and data visualization.
  • Assist with the development of research-driven creative concepts, strategies and plans for marketing campaigns and other outreach and dissemination efforts.
  • Contribute to content planning and writing for various print and digital artefacts, from developing and editing reports to creating website copy, social media posts, briefs, brochures, posters, and other resources.

Media & Design

  • Brainstorm and develop original creative content and ideas, and support content writing across various media to enhance storytelling.
  • Adapt tone and style of content and communications based on project objectives and format, while ensuring all written materials effectively translate into multimedia formats.
  • Write scripts for videos and animations, develop interview-based storylines, and create clear, engaging copy for static design materials.
  • Collaborate with designers, video editors, and producers to craft engaging narratives across live-action and mixed-format video, animation, and design products.

Digital Learning & Products

  • Contribute to instructional design for e-learning modules and courses, including supporting learner-focused research, collaboration with subject-matter-experts, and conceptualization of innovative digital learning approaches.
  • Develop content for learning resources, both interactive and static. This includes developing copy for learning platforms and websites as well as crafting content for brochures, toolkits, presentations, reports and other educational resources. For digital learning experiences, this may involve working with authoring tools such as Articulate, Canvas or Captivate.
  • Contribute to UX design and prototyping work, including quality assurance and user testing to enhance the usability and engagement of products.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

Your skills and experience

  • At least 1 year of work experience in communications, writing, research, media, marketing, or education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives for different media formats.
  • An adaptable writer who can switch between creative, technical, journalistic, and marketing tones.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with an ability to extract key insights from data, synthesize complex information and transform it into engaging content.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational and time-management skills.
  • Collaborative and open to feedback, working closely with creative teams.
  • Interested in content that educates, makes an impact, and/or is data-driven.
  • A degree, diploma, or certification in communications, journalism, media, marketing, education, or a related field that emphasizes critical thinking, analysis, writing, user-oriented research and storytelling.

Bonus if you...

  • Have experience writing for video, animation, marketing materials, or digital storytelling, ideally with a focus on content creation for non-fiction video and digital platforms.
  • Have experience with technical writing - such as creating white papers, user guides/manuals, or research reports.
  • Are proficient in data visualization and comfortable working with large datasets.
  • Are familiar with creative media and/or technology development pipelines.
  • Speak languages in addition to English - especially French or Spanish.

Don’t sweat it if you don’t have everything listed above. We believe in growth and curiosity. If you have some of these qualities and are excited about this opportunity, then we want to hear from you!
